The Donkey Dealers Association (DDA) has requested the support of the Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture and Production Services, Hon. Bello Ka’oje, regarding the regulation of the donkey business in the country.
They emphasised that this move would create thousands of jobs for youth.
The DDA raised concerns over calls for an outright ban on the donkey business, stating that such a move would be counter-productive as it would create more hardship for families that depend on the donkey value chain business to earn a living.
After their meeting with Hon. Ka’oje, the National Public Relations Officer of DDA, Yusuf Tafiya’u, informed journalists about the business opportunities in the donkey industry.
“We held a meeting with the Committee on Agriculture, discussing numerous issues. Several bills have been passed by the Senate to ban the donkey business, but the Association is advocating for the need to regulate the business because many youths are engaged in the donkey business and derive their livelihood from it.
This is why we encourage the Senate and the House of Representatives to support us in regulation rather than a ban on business.
“The business will help employ more youth. The donkey value chain will create thousands of job opportunities, and the donkey business is especially important in northern Nigeria,” he said.
He mentioned that the association is encouraging the government to stop the illegal slaughtering of donkeys by the Chinese and the smuggling of skin for drug and cosmetic production.
“If you visit the markets and the slaughtering camps within northern Nigeria, you will see many youths engaged in the business.
This is why we encourage the government to support the association in establishing a donkey ranching system and breeding system so that we can buy the animals and distribute them to the farmers to multiply.
“We also encourage the government to stop the Chinese from illegally exporting donkey skin and bones. The Chinese go to northern Nigeria, buy these donkeys, including the pregnant ones, and slaughter them because they are interested in the skin.
The animal is going into extinction, which is why the association wants the government to support them in ranching and stop the Chinese from exporting donkey derivatives illegally.
“What the Chinese are interested in is the skin because it contains a chemical that they extract to produce anti-ageing tablets, cosmetics, and manpower as well.
That is why we want the government to support us in the regulation of the business so that we can multiply these animals,” Tafiya’u added.
The National President of DDA, Dike Obinna, told journalists that they informed the Committee Chairman that they have been working in collaboration with the Nigeria Agriculture Quarantine Service (NAQS), Nigerian Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. All they are asking for is regulation of the donkey business.
“We visited the Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, informing him that we have been working in collaboration with NAQS, the Nigerian police, and the Civil Defence Corps. All we are asking for is the regulation of the donkey business, which we have succeeded in at the National Assembly, and the bill was passed in our favour.
We are asking him that if the federal government should do anything, it should be ranching and breeding so that these animals do not go into extinction,” he stated.
In response, Hon. Ka’oje affirmed his support for the Association in its quest to revitalise the donkey value chain through ranching, breeding, and the regulation of the business.
