Artist urges FG to build standard Art Gallery

A Renowned multidimensional Artist, Mr Demas Nwoko, has urged the Federal Government to build a standard Art gallery that would efficiently preserve contemporary Artworks by Nigerian Artists.

Nwoko told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja that there was an urgent need for a befitting National Gallery, especially in Abuja to accommodate all the contemporary artworks.

“Considering the fact that our reading culture is strongly declining and our children don’t have the patience to read anymore but a piece of Artwork can never be missed because that is our history, “he said.

He commended the National Gallery of Arts for doing all possible to preserve Nigeria contemporary artworks adding that the onus still lies on them to do more.

“The National Gallery of Arts is the custodians of all the art property of this country.

He also advocated for the training of staff of the Gallery of Arts stressing that National Galleries all over the world are waiting to welcome them.

Nwoko added that the day we started creating our own properties, that day poverty would disappear in Nigeria.

“Let’s get creative, everyone is endowed with a certain degree of creativity.”

The award-winning 84 years old author has added to his accolades a book written on him and exhibition of images of his Artworks recently by the National Gallery of Arts to honour him.

Nwoko has in the last six decades executed enduring works from painting and sculptures to hardcore architecture with imposing structures that arouse admiration across the country

NAN reports that Nwoko has till date remained relevant as he was still sought after by discerning Nigerians and expatriates to design and execute buildings among other commissions.

Nwoko’s works fuse modern techniques in architecture and stage design with African tradition.

With works such as The Dominican Institute, Ibadan and The Akenzua Cultural Center, Benin, to his credit, Nwoko is one “artist-architect” who believes in celebrating the African tradition in his works.
