The Nigerian Army (NA) has reaffirmed its commitment to evaluating the proficiency and leadership capabilities of its officers through the 2024 edition of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Nigerian Army Merit Award.
The event, themed “Towards Greater Heights,” took place on November 1, 2024, at the newly constructed Lieutenant General TA Lagbaja Multipurpose Hall in Minna Military Cantonment.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, the ceremony honored 26 officers who excelled in various promotional examinations, alongside a deserving NA Division recognized for its commendable performance among training schools.
The awards aim to promote hard work, dedication, and healthy competition within the NA, ultimately enhancing professionalism.
During the ceremony, the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Maj. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, who attended as the Special Guest of Honour (SGoH), acknowledged the significance of the Merit Awards.
Represented by Maj. Gen. Obinna Ajunwa, Director-General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre (NAHFC), the Acting COAS expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate the dedication of officers and emphasized the importance of such recognition in fostering a culture of excellence.
Maj. Gen. Oluyede highlighted the merit awards as crucial for encouraging officers to prepare adequately for future examinations and motivating junior officers to strive for excellence, thus enhancing overall professionalism within the Army.
He congratulated the awardees and commended TRADOC’s role in cultivating a competitive spirit among officers.
In his welcome address, the Chief Host and Commander of TRADOC NA, Maj. Gen. Kevin Aligbe, reflected on the significance of the awards, first introduced in 2021, in promoting administrative efficiency and operational effectiveness.
He announced the introduction of a new category, the Best Division Award, which evaluates divisions based on their training school performance.

Maj. Gen. Aligbe also reported that the Army’s training objectives for 2024 had been met, with a comprehensive report expected at the upcoming COAS Annual Conference in Abuja.
As part of its commitment to community welfare, approximately 33,000 educational materials were distributed to over 7,000 children in four schools within the Minna Military Cantonment.
The event concluded with the commissioning of the Lt Gen TA Lagbaja Multipurpose Hall, underscoring the NA’s commitment to enhancing training and social activities.
The ceremony featured various merit awards, including the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award for Excellence and awards for the best candidates in multiple promotional examinations.
