Different glassware and vessels have been fashioned for different types of drinks and to ease the process. For example, if you have a perfectly measured cocktail, the size of the vessel’s mouth can help release the aromas. The design of a glass can also keep the drink warm or help it stay cool. Enhanced flavour and temperatures are two key factors that improve drinking experience and determine the vessel to drink from. Here are some common types of drinking vessels and what they hold:

Mug

A ceramic cup with thick walls used for hot drinks, especially tea. The thickness is to retain the heat of its content.

 

Schooner

A large drinking glass used for beer and sherry.

 

Tumbler

A small drinking glass without a handle or stem. It is mostly used for concentrated drinks and alcoholic substances. The size helpfully discourages overdose.

 

Wine glass

Red wine glass

Glasses for red wine tendto have a larger, rounder bowl to aid swirling the wine easily and allowair into it. The long stem keeps the hand away from spoiling the cold temperature of the drink. Examples: Pinot Noir, Syrah.

 

White wine glass

White wine glasses tendto have a smaller mouth area and  a smaller surface area to allow air. Thatway, the wine does not oxidize too fast. Examples: Chardonnay, Sauvignon.

 

Flute glass

Sparkling wine needs even less surface area, as this will help preserve the bubbles and stop it from going flat too quickly. Hence, the flute glass, with its tall, thin bowl and smallmouth. Also used for Champagne cocktails. Examples: Champagne, Prosecco, Bellini.

Cocktail Glassware

 

Cocktail glass

The shape isinformed by the strong aromas of traditional cocktails.The mouth brings the nose of the drinker to close to the surface of the drink thus enjoying its flavour and taste. Examples: Martinis, Cosmopolitan, Brandy Alexander, Kamikaze.

 

Highball glass

Thisis a glass tumbler used to serve ‘tall’ cocktails and other mixed drinks thathave a large proportion of a non-alcoholic mixer, and are poured over ice. Examples: Dark ‘N’ Stormy, Bloody Mary, Mojito, gin and tonic.

 

Lowball glass

A short tumbler thathas a solid base which holds little liquid. Examples: Old Fashioned, Negroni, White Russian.

 

Speciality glassware

Hurricane glass

This tall, curved glass has the shape of a hurricane vase. It is used to serve mixed drinks particularly the Hurricane, where it got its name.

 

Martini glass

Martini glasses aredifferent from the traditional cocktail glass by generally having a larger bowl and having a conical base.

 

Margarita glass

Margaritais a speciality drink with its own unique glass, Margaritas were traditionally served in a margarita glass; a “stepped-diameter variant of a cocktail glass.”

 

The Glencairn whisky glass

This specialty piece was developed by Glencairn Crystal Ltd. Its purpose isto get the maximum flavours when drinking whisky. The wide bowl displays the colour and exposes the aromas, but instead uses a slim mouth to ease drinking.

 

Snifter glass

The snifter glass has a very short stem thatallows the handwarm the drink inside. Whilethe large bowl allows the drink to be swirled,  a shorter mouth traps aromas and allows the drinker to fully enjoy as they sip. Snifterglasses are used for brown spirits like brandy and whisky.
