APGA lauds NASS over expeditious treatment of minimum wage bill

THE All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has commended the National Assembly for treating the new minimum wage bill with urgency.

Dr Victor Oye, National Chairman of APGA, gave the commendation in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Thursday.

The new minimum wage bill went through the second reading on Thursday in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Oye said workers deserved fair and improved wage in view of the current economic reality.

He urged the lawmakers to sustain the tempo and conclude the process.

“Nigerian workers deserve a living wage, in view of the current global economic downturn.

“The National Assembly owes workers an obligation to pass the bill expeditiously to alleviate their sufferings,” he said.

Oye urged President Muhammadu Buhari to complement the National Assembly equally accenting to the bill with urgency, whenever it was returned to him.

“It is our hope that the president will be kind to grant the bill accelerated assent once the National Assembly passes it,” he said.

NAN reports that the new minimum wage proposal of N27, 000 and N30,000 for state and federal workers, respectively, was approved by the Council of State on Jan. 22.

The bill has been scheduled for public hearing on Monday.
