RULING All Progressive Congress (APC) led Government has been accused of using the anti-corruption agencies of government to intimidate members of the opposition in order to weaken the opposition and woo its members to its fold particularly for it (APC) to remain in power after the 2019 general elections.
The accusation was made by the Bauchi State chapter of the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in its reaction to the recent defection of the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alleging that he joined the ruling party for the fear of persecution and intimidation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which is currently prosecuting him for alleged corruption.
Bauchi State Publicity Secretary of the PDP Alhaji Yaya Nuwa Zainabari in an interview alleged that the APC led government is using all the anti-graft agencies to scare members of the opposition thereby forcing them to join the party for perceived safety and freedom from the rigours of persecution.
On the defection of Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa, Yayanuwa Zainabari declared that “he defected for his personal interest, it was not in the best interest of the nation or Bauchi state. He was suspended by the party over abscondment from his office for over six months as PDP National Deputy Chairman.”
He added that: “Moreso, he was once a Deputy Governor (in Bauchi State) and this APC government is fond of intimating people who held power even as Local Government Chairman. That will compel you to defect to the party because they have turned the EFCC into their hunting dog. This is one of the reasons for his decision I think.”
Aside that, the PDP spokesperson also opined that Babayo Gamawa being one time Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Deputy Governor and Senator was not contented with what he has gained in his recent position as Deputy party Chairman, hence his decision to quit the party.
The Publicity Secretary, however, boasted that despite Gamawa’s and others exit, the party’s chance to win the next election in the state would not be affected pointing out that more prominent politicians had abandoned the party in the past ‘but it did not die.
It would be recalled that on Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari was in Bauchi to receive some prominent politicians from the state who defected to the ruling APC led by two former Governors and Babayo Garba Gamawa.
