Mr Rauf Aregbesola
Popularly known as Iya Olobi, she was said to have died in the early morning of Tuesday in her residence, located in Ilesa, Osun State.
Late Alhaja Saratu Aregbesola, who was over 80 years old is expected to be interred according to Muslim rites today at 4.00pm, in her residence.
As of the time of filing this report, it could not be ascertained if her son, Governor Rauf Aregbesola could attend the burial rites as Tribune Online reliably gathered he was away in Kebbi State for All Progressive Congress (APC) governors’ meeting when the news of his mother’s demise was broken.
Meanwhile, Osun State chapter of the APC, on Tuesday described the death of Aregbesola’s mother as great loss to the state, saying “we have lost great woman”.
In a press statement signed by the party’s chairman, Mr Gboyega Famoodun APC said “we received the news of the passing of Alhaja Saratu Aregbesola, fondly called ‘Iya Olobi’, the mother of our exceptional governor and head of the APC-led government in the state, Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, with regret and sadness”.
The statement reads in part, “as we mourn this natural event of the octogenarian, we also have cause to be grateful to Allah for the life of this great woman, who has had the unique grace of given birth to a child that has become a jewel not only to the people of Osun and Yoruba land in particular, but also Nigeria generally”.
“We also observed that most women alive would want to be so privileged, however only a few have such rare grace to be the vehicle for the birth of a child that will impact the lives of his people positively as Governor Aregbesola has done”.
“Alhaja Saratu Aregbesola was therefore a critical part of the success which her son and our party have achieved, and for which most people in Osun, would remain grateful for this unique gift that Allah has given to the state through her. On behalf of the good people of Osun and the numerous supporters of the APC in the state and beyond, we extend our sympathy to our beloved governor and his family for the loss of Alhaja Saratu. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace”, the party posited.
