Annual scholarship: Why I increased number of beneficiaries by 400% ― Sen Orji

The Senator representing Abia Central at the National Assembly, Chief Theodore Orji Thursday said he increased the number of beneficiaries of his annual scholarship from 60 to 240 to accommodate more students to benefit from the scholarship scheme.

Sen. Orji offered education scholarships to 240 constituents which represent 400% of the 60 of the last edition.

Presenting the scholarship to the beneficiaries in Umuahia, the senator noted “education remains the greatest empowerment that can be given to anyone”, adding that what he did was to “live a legacy for prosperity” and encouraged the recipients to take their studies seriously.

In his speech during the occasion, the state Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu commended Sen. Orji for his “efforts at enhancing the educational status of his constituents”.

Speaking at that 6th edition of the annual scholarship program organised by senator Orji for indigent and bright undergraduates drawn from local government Areas in Abia central held at the international conference centre Umuahia, the Deputy appreciated the immediate past Governor of the state for sustaining the scholarship program as well as increasing the number of the beneficiaries to 240.

Sir Oko Chukwu noted that the gesture has gone a long way in encouraging the students in the pursuit of their academics and congratulated the beneficiaries of the scholarship, advising them to shun social vices and focus on achieving academic excellence, to make their parents and society proud. pointing out that it takes sacrifice to do what Sen. Orji is doing.

Also speaking the member representing Isiala Ngwa North and South federal constituency Chief Darlington Nwokocha noted that the impact of education cannot be overemphasised in the development of society and commended senator T A Orji for distinguishing himself in service to humanity.

Earlier, the chairman on the occasion and immediate past Vice-chancellor AbI State University, Uturu Prof Uche Ikonne pointed out that investment in education is key to civilisation, and commended Sen. Orji for instituting a generational culture, noting that education is the greatest investment in the state which is an evidence to the performances of Abia students in local and international examinations.

Also speaking the Chief Liaison Officer to Sen. Orji Hon. Ifeanyi Umere reeled out the achievements of the senator which include the building of health centres, school blocks, capacity building among others, noting that the senator has performed excellently well.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with newsmen, including Adaeze Ogbonna, Chioma Ekoro, and visually impaired Chizaram Ukairo thanked Senator T A Orji for touching their lives positively.

The wife of the senator and former Abia State first lady, Odochi Orji and a veteran Nollywood actor, Chinwentalu Agu we’re among the personalities at the occasion.
