Anenih for burial today in Uromi

Tony Anenih

THE remains of the former Chairman, Board of Trustees, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Anenih is scheduled to be buried in his hometown of Arue-Uromi, Esan North East local government area of Edo state.

Eminent Nigerians which included the national chairman of the PDP, Mr Uche Secondus, Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike, Senator Mathew Urhoghide, Edo state PDP chairman, Dr Dan Orbih and a host of others were on hand yesterday at the Benin Airport to receive the corpse of Anenih from Abuja who passed passed on last October 28 at 84 in the federal capital territory.
Thousands of party faithful arrived the airport at about 10:30 am, defying the scorching sun and waited patiently till 2:00 pm before heading in droves for the University of Benin Sports Complex for the service of songs.
Orbih who described the deceased top politician as a titan arrived the airport at 2:30 pm in the company of Secondus and the party governorship candidate in the 2016 election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and others later drove down to UNIBEN to await the remains of the former BoT for the funeral of songs.

Some of the party faithful and the Undertakers who were to bear the casket, however, got a shocker when they learnt that the remains of the former BoT Chairman of the party whom they have long been waiting for have long arrived the sports complex.
Urhoghide described the late BoT chairman as one who impacted the lives of many Nigerians.
“Anenih was not just a leader at the party level to all of us but he was indeed a father. A great patriot who lived an exemplary life, worthy of emulation by every right thinking Nigerian. Of course, if you were privileged to be close to him, you would have known his personal attributes and nuisances.
“His one Nigerian that came, he stood at all landscape, dominated and did very well.
“We are very proud of him and you can see the attendance of dignitaries across party lines coming to him.
“Anenih was a father and he is still a big loss to this country by whatever imagination, he was good to everybody,” he said.
He said nobody has been able to fit into his shoes as he was a great philanthropist.
“No, if you are talking of that, Anenih was not just about politics, the philanthropy aspect of him and if ever look at it even as Catholic, what I am privileged to know about him, remove politics. Even in politics, he excelled. He was a perfectionist who believed that the rights of the people must prevail and every expression that gone through the ballot box was sacrosanct.
“Over and above that, this man was one big philanthropist. I went to Catholic churches that he single-handedly built.
“Go and see somebody building a house for old people and you could identify it as the best edifice in that Teaching Hospital and he furnished it.
I want to tell you, some party leaders who lost their loved ones and some who died, Anenih opened the account for them and I am a signatory to one of the accounts, to look after the dependent that those people lift behind and to train them in school.
“So, those aspects of him not known to people I do not think there is anything you can talk about him and when you are talking about Anenih and you are talking of politics, you are just diminishing the sphere of his influence,” he said.
