Anambra Special Anti-Touting Squad cracks down on robbery gang in Onitsha

Published by

The Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) of Anambra State has intensified its efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, particularly in the bustling commercial city of Onitsha.

The squad made significant progress last night by apprehending two robbery suspects at Upper Iweka following a string of criminal activities.

The suspects, Chinedu Ihuobi and Ikemefuna Eze, both from Imo State, were arrested after robbing a victim, Eze Franklin, of his Samsung X20F9 Ultra smartphone and N100,000 at around 7 p.m. on 15 January. During their confession, the duo admitted to committing another robbery in Awka on the same day.

According to the suspects, they sold Franklin’s smartphone, valued at over N1 million, for just N50,000 to a Point-of-Sale (POS) agent located under the Upper Iweka flyover. Efforts are underway to trace the buyer and recover the stolen property.

The suspects also disclosed the involvement of two accomplices, identified only as “Assassin” and “John,” who are currently on the run. The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the remaining gang members.

The spokesperson for the Special Anti-Touting Squad, Amb. Karen James, in a statement issued to journalists in Awka on Friday, commended the team’s swift action in arresting the suspects and assured residents that their safety remains a top priority.

“We are committed to making Anambra State a safer place for everyone. Criminals should know that there is no hiding place for them.”

Residents of Onitsha expressed gratitude for the squad’s vigilance and efforts in maintaining security in the state. SASA has pledged to continue its operations across Anambra to ensure the elimination of criminal elements.

Investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon the completion of the inquiry. Authorities have called on the public to report any suspicious activities and assist in providing information that could lead to the arrest of other fleeing suspects, James concluded.
