TEAM Kano has emerged winner of the 2017 National Para Soccer Tournament which took place in Awka, Anambra State.
Team Kano beat Team Taraba 3-2 in the final match to emerge four-time winners of the tournament.
The tournament was organised by Rotary International as part of activities marking the 2017 World Polio Day celebration.
Governor Willie Obiano and his wife, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano who also graced the event, were honored with awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions towards the eradication of polio in Nigeria.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Willie Obiano revealed that the state has been declared polio-free because of the commitment of its government towards supporting immunisation activities and under his watch, the support has intensified.
Obiano said, major steps by his administration that have aided the campaign include the provision of water ambulances and speedboats to help immunisation in the river-rine communities which spell very low health indices for the state as well as a restructuring of the state’s primary health care arrangement for optimal performance.
He assured that his government is committed to transforming the State Health sector to ensure that the of State get the best quality of Medicare.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria National Polio Plus Commission, Dr Tunji Funsho said through the tournament, Rotary International is not only supporting the war against polio but also creating the opportunity for those who were unfortunate to have suffered the disease to realise their full potentials.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Obiano and his wife for their strategic collaboration with the club to achieve immunisation targets in the state.
The Captain of the winning Kano Team, Mr Murtala Alhassan who expressed delight that his team emerged victoriously, thanked the club for opportunities afforded them through the tournament.
Governor Obiano also during the event, on behalf of the State government, handed out the sum of 500,000 naira as a reward to the winner of the tournament while the second-place team got the sum of 300,000 naira.
