Anambra House of Assembly urges INEC to conduct Anambra Central rerun

The Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct the Anambra Central Senatorial rerun election.

It said that would give the people of the district a voice in the Senate.

The rerun has lingered for nearly two years following protracted litigation.

The Assembly had unanimously supported the motion for the conduct of the rerun moved by Hon Chigbo Enwezor, representing Onitsha North 1 State constituency.

The lawmakers said the people of the district had been subjected to undue denials due to the continued vacancy of the seat since the sack of Mrs Uche Ekwunife, representing the district in December 2015 by the court of Appeal, Enugu division.

The Court of Appeal which ordered the conduct of a rerun poll in the district within 90 days, barred the Peoples Democratic Party from fielding any candidate in the fresh poll.

Enwezor who moved the motion during plenary said “the situation is no longer funny as it will be two years soon, yet Anambra central is still being denied a senator.”

Seconding the motion, Mr Obinna Emenaka, representing Anambra East Constituency said there was need to conduct the election as matters concerning the state would no longer be effectively handled by  two senators from the state.

The  Speaker of the assembly (Retd) Hon Rita Maduagwu in her ruling said the conduct of the election should not be a thing of politicized as the non-representation of the zone in the senate was affecting the people of the state.

The minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, who was candidate of the All Progressives Congress  in the 2015 general elections had recently attributed the non-conduct of the election to pending litigation at various courts.

Chief Victor Umeh, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and candidate of the party in the election had disagreed with Ngige, saying that the Supreme Court judgment of 10thJanuary 2017 had removed every impediment holding the rerun.
