REPRIEVE came to the people of Amuri Community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on Thursday following Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s approval for the commencement of work on the Amuri/Agbani road project abandoned by successive regimes in the state for the past 16 years.
The indigenes of the area resident in United States of America (USA) while lauding the incumbent governor of the state for the award of contract, recalled that past governments in the state abandoned the important road which links the locality with other neighboring communities which included the university town of Agbani the country home of the former governor of the state, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani.
According to the indigenes under the auspices of “Amuri USA”, led by Mr Sunday Nwegbo, “The terrible state of the road has continued to make life unbearable for our people over the years, that is why we are quite happy and grateful to the governor for his intervention”.
They noted, “Past members of the National Assembly (NASS) that represented the area, and key state government officials made false promises to our people on the road which has remained a death trap.
“We want to therefore, on behalf of the good people of Amuri expressed our appreciation to our governor, Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, for this gesture, of remembering our neglected community, which past administrations, especially that of Chimaroke Nnamani, deliberately marginalized and abandoned for eight years he governed the state.
The group, blamed the then Nnamani’s administration for allegedly inflicting hardship on the people of the locality by not have extended any form of socio infrastructure to the area, stressing that they did not witness any government presence during his eight years tenure, geographical proximity with his community notwithstanding.
They also commended the member representing Nkanu East and West Federal constituency in the House of representatives, Dr Chukwuemeka Ujam, for attracting a whopping sum of 100 million naira from the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology as part of his constituency projects for the road, adding that the money will be used for the construction of part of the said road.
“The most annoying thing is that this same Amuri/Agbani road kept reappearing in all the budgets the former governor presented to the state House of Assembly, yet nothing was done on the road until he left office.
“The road will no doubt improve the life of our people, as well as the economy of the community because as a people who are predominantly farmers, we will now have access road to evacuate our agricultural produce to the urban cities.
