Ogun State Assembly Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo
The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, on Thursday, hinted that the local security outfit, Amotekun, will soon be launched in the state.
He disclosed this during the Ogun Civil Society Conversation with Mr Speaker in commemoration of the 2020 World Human Rights Day, organised by the Human Rights and Grassroots Development Society (HRGDS), in conjunction with Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Ogun.
The speaker said that the Amotekun Bill has been passed by the Assembly and assented to by Governor Dapo Abiodun for implementation.
Oluomo added that the state government is putting machinery in motion to ensure successful take off in the interest of the people of the state
The legislator posited that security matters should be totally removed from the exclusive list to allow each state of the federation to manage it.
He said: “We copied our presidential system of government from the United States of America (USA) and each state in the country is managing its security situation. This should be allowed to happen here as well. Each state must secure the lives and property of the people.”
The speaker explained that the assembly had passed 30 bills into law while over 100 petitions had been resolved in its 19 months in office.
Earlier, the National Secretary of CDHR, Yinka Folarin, stated that the programme was organised to engage critical stakeholders on how to move the state and the nation forward.
Folarin explained that for democracy to be achieved wholeheartedly, the people’s agitation was inevitable, hence, the need for human right groups to continue to engage political office holders for the betterment of the nation.
