Amotekun: DELSU don urges South South govs to take a cue

Following the floating of a regional security outfit by governors of states in Western Nigeria to checkmate further insecurity concerns, Dr Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri has urged governors of the S’South region to follow suit.

Ufuophu-Biri, an Associate Professor with the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, gave the advice Tuesday while speaking exclusively with Nigerian Tribune.

The ace broadcaster and public commentator described the current security setup in Nigeria as fragile and unstable and therefore needs supports from regional security outfits to halt the ongoing security breakdown in the country.

“The South-South governors should imitate what the South-West governors have done in establishing the regional security mechanism.

“It is something like what is obtained in the US where there are over 18, 000 independent police departments across the country and this ensures effective community and neighbourhood policing.

“The security architecture in Nigeria is shaking, there are issues of kidnapping, robbery gangsterism and a lot of other crimes.

“So people just can’t sit down and watch this high level of insecurity go on unchecked,” he noted.

Ufuophu-Biri, a unionist and social critic, lauded the courageous security initiative of the governors from Western Nigeria, saying it will complement the general security architecture of the country.

“What the South-West governors have done is quite okay because if you are not secured then what’s the essence of living.

“What they have done is a kind of complement to the general security architecture.

“I recommend that the South-South governors imitate the South-West. In the South-South, there has also been a high level of insecurity.

“They should also establish such outfit to complement the internal security arrangement and mechanism of their region,” Dr Ufuophu-Biri admonished.
