Men of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, have arrested about 62 suspected criminals, including a notorious jailbird, Usman Garuba, who has been coordinating kidnapping activities across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Garuba who was apprehended by men of Amotekun during a raid of the hideout of his gang at Ago Dada/Ago Oyinbo axis of Akure, the state capital.
Speaking on the arrest of the kidnap kingpin, the Amotekun Commander in the state, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said Garuba had confessed to having successfully kidnapped nine persons and collected ransom from their families for their release.
The Amotekun Commander disclosed that some villagers in one of the communities who resisted the Garuba and his men were tortured and punished by the kidnappers who returned in the middle of the night to set the community on fire.
He said the whole community was torched and razed by the kidnappers who ran away after carrying out the act, leaving most residents of the community homeless.
However, the Amotekun men, while acting on a tip-off, stormed the kidnappers’ den, arresting five members of the gang while some of them took to their heels.
He listed some of the items found in their possession to include, single barrel guns, bullets, amulets and money received as part of ransom, food items including half bag of beans, rice, some loaves of bread, rolls of cigarette and other consumable items.
He said it was discovered that Garuba and two members of his gang had been convicted and jailed twice for different crimes.
Among the suspects arrested and paraded were bugglers, rustlers who specialised in stealing goats were arrested conveying goats to Ondo City where residents cherish and relish Asun (barbecued goat meat).
Appreciating other security agencies, the Army, Police, NSCDC, DSS and others, for their support, the Special Adviser (Security Matters) to the governor stated that the assistance and existing synergy between Amotekun Corps and other agencies made possible to make the state uncomfortable and impossible for criminals to hide.
He appreciated the people of the state for availing security agencies information on suspected criminal activities in their areas that led to the arrest of the suspects.
