OGUN State Governor, Senator Ibukunle Amosun, was on Saturday night named The Sun Man of the Year, 2016. Amosun was honoured for bringing “peace and tranquility to the hitherto crisis-plagued State, building physical, economic and social infrastructure that will remain visible and enduring for decades”
The statement said further: “His (Amosun’s) industrial revolution has attracted over 100 new companies to Ogun in the past few years, catapulting Ogun to the top as the industrial hub of Nigeria. The State internally generated revenue has moved from N700 million to N5 billon per annum.”
While receiving the award, Governor Amosun pledged to do more for the people of Ogun State and beyond.
He said, “When an award like this is given, for me it is a call for more service. It is not for me alone, it is for the good people of Ogun State.”
Governor Nyesom Nwike of Rivers State was named Governor of the Year, while Speaker of the House of Representatives was Political Icon of the Year. Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari won the maiden “Courage in Leadership Award”.
Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to the former Kaduna State Governor, Alhaji Balarabe Musa; former Finance Minister, Kalu Idika Kalu; Former Minister of Industry, Mrs Onikepo Akande; Professor of Zoology, Anya O. Anya; and Eleganza boss, Chief Razak Akanni Okoya.
Other winners of the night were Lt Col. Mohammed Abu Ali (posthumous) who was named Nigerian Hero of the Year; Rita Dominic (Nollywood Personality of the Year; Alhaji Tajudeen Owoyemi (Hospitality Man of the Year); Stella Okoli (Business Person of the Year); Shehu Dikko (Sport Personality of the Year); Dr Cosmas Maduka (Investor of the Year); and Chief Tony Ezenna (Manufacturer of the Year)
Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the event and former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, congratulated the winners for their vision and hard work.
Anyaoku described the Sun Awards as one of the company’s most important contributions to national development
The event was also attended by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, several sitting and former Governors, Minsters, legislators and traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife. The Chairman of African Newspapers of Nigeria, Plc, Reverend (Mrs) Tola Oyediran, also attended the event.
