Worried by the plight of Nigerian workers, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN) has called for improved working conditions while alleviating their sufferings.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission called on relevant authorities to seek improvement of the existing working conditions of Nigerian workers.
A statement by the Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages of the NHRC, Obinna Nwakonye said, Ojukwu, made the call while commemorating the 2024 International Workers Day, which is observed globally, every May 1.
Ojukwu, while celebrating the achievements and resilience of workers, said, the essential role played by workers in shaping societies and economies globally, can not be overemphasized
The Executive Secretary said the 2024 International Day of Workers underscored the resilience, dedication and sacrifice of Nigerian workers particularly, in the face of the unprecedented high cost of living in Nigeria.
He said, “The NHRC remains unwavering in its commitment to advocating for the rights of all Nigerians, including workers”.

The NHRC boss urged the Government to consider the widespread agitation for wage increases and to equally address other areas, like high cost of goods, poor power supply, transportation, healthcare, insecurity and others.
Speaking further, Dr. Ojukwu noted that, from ensuring that, workers enjoy fair wages, safe working conditions, to combating discrimination and exploitation of workers, the Commission remains dedicated to creating a comfortable environment where all workers will be treated with respect and dignity.
This year’s theme, “Climate change, safety and Health at work place”, resonates deeply with the NHRC’S mandate of promoting and protecting the rights of all Nigerians, including their right to uphold the well-being, safety and dignity of workers in all Sectors.
