Two teenage sisters have been arrested in Pakistan for the murder of their father, whom they reportedly set on fire in retaliation for years of sexual abuse.
Police confirmed that the incident occurred on January 1, when the sisters attacked their father while he was sleeping. He was subsequently taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
“The girls said that they decided amongst themselves to find a ‘permanent solution’,” stated Rizwan Tariq, a senior police official in Gujranwala, in an interview with AFP. The sisters used petrol taken from a motorcycle to carry out the attack.
According to the girls, the eldest had been raped by their father for over a year, and he had attempted to assault the younger sister twice.
Their mothers, who are both married to the man, were reportedly aware of the abuse but were not informed of the sisters’ plan for revenge.
In an effort to protect the identities of the girls, AFP has chosen not to disclose the father’s name.
One of the mothers has been arrested, while the other is currently being questioned by authorities.
“We expect to present them before the court in a few days, as soon as we finish the investigation,” Tariq added.
