Alleged money laundering: Atiku’s son-in-law, lawyer arraigned, remanded in EFCC custody

Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s son-in-law Abdullahi Babalele and lawyer, Uyiekpen Osagie-Giwa, in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Oweibo also granted a motion ex-parte seeking leave of the court that the money laundering case against Babalele should be heard during the ongoing court vacation.

EFCC had arraigned Babalele, for allegedly laundering $140,000 in the build-up to the 2019 general elections, while Osagie-Giwa, was separately arraigned for allegedly laundering $2m, in connection with the polls.

When they appeared before the court on Wednesday, the duo pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Justice Oweibo adjourned till Thursday to take their bail applications.

The judge ordered that they be returned to the EFCC custody.

Tribune Online recalls that Atiku contested the presidential election against President Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Atiku and the PDP have also alleged that Babalele is being tried because of his relationship with the former vice president.
