Alleged corruption: Court grants Justice Ademola, wife accelerated hearing

Published by

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, sitting at Maitama, on Monday, granted the application brought before it by Justice Adeniyi Francis Ademola and his wife, Mrs Olabowale Toluwatope Ademola, for abridgment of time for accelerated hearing.

The embattled couple were on December 13, 2016, arraigned before Justice Jude Okeke, sitting at FCT High Court 15 at Maitama, on an 11-court charge bordering on conspiracy to collect gratification, collection of gratification and illegal possession of arm and ammunitions.

They were said to have committed the offence contrary to Section 8 (1) (a) of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

Justice Ademola is among the seven judges whose houses were raided by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) between 7 and 8 October, 2016 in sting operations over an alleged corruption.

His wife was the Lagos State Head of Service until last month when she was relieved of the post by the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

After hearing their bail applications as argued by the counsels, Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), and Chief Roberts Clarke (SAN), respectively, the presiding judge had on the first day of arraignment granted them bail in the sum of N50 million each on self cognisance, ordering them to deposit their international passports with the court pending the conclusion of the trial.

At the resumed hearing, on Monday, Ademola’s counsel, Dr Ikpeazu (SAN) told the court that they filed a motion dated December 16, 2016 for abridgement of time for accelerated hearing of the case.

He said the application was brought before the court pursuant to the provisions of Section 396 of the Administration of Criminal Justice (ACJ) Act 2015.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr Segun Jegede, did not object to the application, but only informed the court that the prosecution would file an amended charge to bring in a third defendant, Mr Joe Agi (SAN).

After hearing both parties, the presiding judge, Justice Okeke, granted the application for abridgement of time.

He however adjourned the matter till tomorrow, 11 January for plea and further arraignment in the event that the prosecution files a fresh charge, while he fixed January 16 for commencement of trial.
