Albums with no bad songs

Music is a key component of our lives; we listen to music, subconsciously, we sing these songs, we recall them. That’s how music has grown to become a part of our lives. There are some albums that we deem as having no bad songs; that’s where we are headed. On this week’s edition of WhatsApp Conversation, we discuss music, albums and the fine art behind them. Excerpts:

Emmanuel Ayodeji (GOAT by Polo G.)

Well, I like the lyrics, delivery, and the message it passed across. It was released in the nascent stages of COVID-19, a period of mental health turmoil and, it related perfectly.

Eric Ajayi (X by Ed Sheran)

Aside from the fact that Ed doesn’t have any bad songs, X seems to be at  the peak of his music. He was flawless through the entire album. Extraordinary music and flow.

David James (The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars – David Bowie)

Oh, I am an oldie and nothing will ever beat the classics for me. With The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Bowie creates this alternate universe where anything and everything is possible. That’s the feel good effect of the song for me.

Clement Olotu (For Emma, Forever Ago  by Bon Iver)

For Emma, Forever Ago is mostly about singer Justin Vernon’s split with then-girlfriend Christy Smith and his feeling of being lost in the world that followed. Yet, simply calling it a “breakup album” is unfair, as such a label is often applied to any record that mentions separation, no matter how devoid of emotion the songs are.

Maryam Salisu (Cry Baby by Melanie Martinez)

I like this album so much because it tells a story. A dark one, but a story. It talks about Cry Baby’s dysfunctional family and allshe went   gone through, and it’s assumed all of it happened before she even started her education.

It is truly a talent to be able to tell a story throughout  all of your music and to have them all have an actual plot. That’s what I admire so much about Melanie Martinez. She’s able to blend her music together to create a huge dark story, but a good one nonetheless.

Joel Ajayi (Boo of the Booless by Chike and Jesus is King by Kanye West)

While I am not an album kind of person, it’s really hard for me to listen to an entire album and like it all. I would pick a favourite track or two and that would be it. But with the Boo of the Booless and Jesus is king album, I listened to every track and I loved it.

Opeyemi Ayodeji (Superstar by Wizkid)

The first time I heard superstar album,

I was very young then, it was the same album that brought Wizkid to  limelight. All hit songs, no miss at allWhile listening to the songs, you could actually feel the struggle and talent of a young artist. It is a perfect album when I listen now. It is nostalgiac and electrifying. It brought back sweet memories of the childhood I missed.

Babatunde Adekanmbi (My favourite album of all time which I keep singing  out is Bed of Stone by Bukola Elemide, also known as ASA.)

The album is uniquely centered towards bringing out the essence of love and it’s implications. The first four tracks are embedded with love messages that are applicable to our family and friends.

She further highlighted the importance of love in our society at large, calling the attention of leaders in all facets of our lives so we can have a sane society and better the lives of many.

Bed of Stone is creatively put up in a musical concept orchestrated with some special instruments. The use of different types of guitars fine-tuned the outcome of the album

Joseph Oluwaloni (About 30 by Adekunle Gold)

That album was released at a time that was an emotionally low moment for me, and was it a solace? Every track In that album was a blessing to me, I listened and listened all over again; from start to finish. The songs were not just good, they spoke to me on another level.

Emmanuel Nebechukwu (The Definition by Jon Bellion.)

The production of that album is one of the best there is out there. The transition, the arrangement, everything on that album was well thought of. No skips for me.

Adeola AdeJuwon (Fireboy DML by LTG & Apollo, Wizkid by Superstar, Burna Boy by African Giant)

For Fireboy’s LTG, it’s a debut album yet he (like Wizkid did in Superstar) showed a mastery of songwriting and a talent to wield melodies. His knack for words is astonishing, I’m talking about lyrics like ‘I miss you like an idiot misses the point.’ Seemingly playful, all right, but (apart from Mayorkun), show me another artist who uses words with such ease like him?

They took his game top-notch in ‘Apollo’. Apollo isn’t just a delve into multiple genres but an assertion of his talents.

These new guys are really good— I’m talking about the likes of Ckay, Oxlade, Buju, Zinolesky. But Fireboy DML is the best in that crop.

‘African Giant’ beams with intentionality, from production to songwriting. No bad songs too. And it has replay value.Wizkid’s is to Nigenotria what Justin Bieber is to America. The guy is extremely talented. There was no single bad song in his Superstar album.

Next week, the topic we will be treating is:“What is one yet to be solved mystery that you would like to see solved before you die?” To be part of the next edition, send your response to 08136601345 via WhatsApp or SMS.
