Alake inaugurates committee to resolve Osun govt, mining company’s impasse

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has established a committee to resolve the ongoing disputes between the Osun State Government and Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL) regarding gold exploration and mining in the state.

Alake noted that the establishment of the committee demonstrates Federal Government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for mining operations in Nigeria.

He said, “We are confident that the committee’s findings and recommendations will provide a lasting solution to the disputes and promote sustainable mining practices that benefit all stakeholders.”

The committee’s primary objectives are to identify the root causes of the disagreement between the Osun State Government and Segilola Resources Operating Limited and review the contractual obligations and agreements between both parties to determine if there have been breaches or misunderstandings.

Additionally, the committee will assess the socio-economic and environmental impacts of Segilola Resources’ operations on host communities and the state’s economy.

The committee will also propose solutions to ensure the continuation of mining activities while safeguarding the interests of the state and affected communities.

The committee, comprising representatives from various government agencies and organizations, will report directly to Dr. Alake and submit its final report within seven days.

Alake also noted, “The solid minerals sector is crucial to Nigeria’s economic growth, and we are committed to creating an enabling environment for investors and stakeholders.” The minister has also expressed optimism about the sector’s potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP.

With this development, stakeholders are hopeful that the disputes will be resolved amicably, paving the way for increased investment and growth in Nigeria’s mining sector.

The move is seen as a significant step towards addressing the challenges facing the sector, including regulatory frameworks, environmental concerns, and community engagement. Dr. Alake’s leadership is expected to bring about meaningful reforms and improvements in the sector.

The committee’s findings and recommendations will provide valuable insights into the disputes and inform policy decisions to promote sustainable mining practices in Nigeria.

The minister’s commitment to transparency and accountability is expected to boost investor confidence and attract more investment to the sector.

The committee’s chairman is Engineer Imam Ganyu, Director of the Mining Inspectorate.
