Alaafin Owoade unveils official title ahead of ascension

The Alaafin-designate, Prince Akeem Owoade, has officially unveiled his title ahead of his ascension to the throne.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the Alaafin-designate will be formally addressed as His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo.

The statement reads:

“This is to inform the general public that the proper manner of addressing the Alaafin for all activities and in the media is EXACTLY as follows: His Imperial Majesty Iku Baba Yeye Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo.

“The number after OWOADE is the Roman Numeral One (I), not the English Number One (1).

“The public is enjoined to adhere strictly to the stated wording without adding any prefix or suffix to the names.”

The unveiling of the official title comes amid the ongoing 21-day traditional rites known as “Oro Ipebi,” which began earlier this month.

On March 7, the Chief of Staff to the monarch, Rotimi Osuntola, confirmed the commencement of the rites in a statement issued in Ibadan. He stated that the rites would conclude on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

The statement reads:

“The Aláàfin of Oyo Kingdom hereby announces the commencement of ÒRÒ ÌPẸBÍ, the mandatory rites for His Imperial Majesty before his ascension to the revered throne of The Aláàfin.

“The rites will take place from Friday, March 7, to Saturday, March 29, 2025. Throughout this period, a curfew will be enforced from 8 pm to 6 am daily across Oyo township.

“Movements will be restricted during curfew hours, and violators will be arrested and detained until 7 am the following day.

“It is important to note that ORO IPEBI, which requires the incoming Aláàfin to undergo absolute seclusion, is a sacred tradition that must be observed and respected by all.”

However, in a new development, the new Alaafin reviewed the curfew time in respect of the ongoing Ramadan fasting, saying he is practicing a Muslim.
