Al-makura tasks Red Cross Society to be proactive in emergency situations

GOVERNOR Umaru Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa State has tasked members of the Nigeria Red Cross Society not to relent their commitment of providing humanitarian services to the people and responding to emergency situations in the society.

He stated this in Lafia while commissioning an edifice donated by the International Community of Red Cross Society (ICRCS) to the state branch of the society, warning the Red Cross members against sentiments that would jeopardise their many years of service to humanity.

The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Silas Agara noted that the rescued missions and rapid responses to emergency cases by the society in past, as well as the provision of relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons, was commendable, worthy of government attention.

He said, as one of the selfless and risky agencies responsible in mitigating human and natural disasters, his administration would continue to provide the society necessary support to enable them to carry out their activities without challenge, adding that the government will continue to partner Red Cross in all human endeavours.

“The state government will accord priority to any agency that is providing critical services to the people, and for the Red Cross the state government will compliment the structure with necessary facilities needed to enable them to carry out their activities conveniently,” he said.

He said, the gesture of the edifice commensurate the demonstration of their complimentary role in evacuating victims of crises and disasters in the state since 2001 to dates.

The National Finance and Planning Adviser of the society, Barrister Adapson Tanimu stressed the need for members of the society in the state to redouble their effort in responding to an emergency situation, void of tribal, religion, racial sentiments.

Barrister Tanimu urged the society to scale up it activities to justify the gesture to them by making its impact felt particularly to vulnerable members of the State.

He cautioned members of the society not to turn the edifice as a place for social gathering or activities but for humanitarian services.

He advised them to maintained the sanctity of the Red Cross as enshrine in its emblem, as any one found guilty would be dealt with accordingly.

Also speaking, the state chairperson of the society, Mrs Patricia Akawu thanked ICRCS and the Nasarawa State government for putting smiles on their faces, saying the donation of the land and the edifice was an answered prayer for the society.

While soliciting for Hilux vehicles and grants to ease their activities, Mrs Akawu pledged their commitment to render unbias services to the people of the State.
