Al-Makura prioritises education in 2017 budget proposal

Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has prioritised education in a N67, 013,057,753 appropriation bill presented to the state’s House of Assembly for consideration and passage for the 2017 fiscal year.

The governor, who presented the appropriation bill at the Assembly chambers on Thursday, in Lafia, said the 2017 budget is christened “budget of reformation”.

The governor explained that, the 2017 budget proposal which is N13 billion lower than the 2016 budget, prioritised education by proposing N11.88 billion in view of  its effect in turning around the fortune of the state, especially in a time of recession.

Al-Makura explained further that, a total of N37,012,251,819), representing 55.23 per cent of the budget, has been earmarked for recurrent expenditure.

He added that, N30,000,805,934, representing 44.77 per cent of the total budget,  has been earmarked as capital expenditure for 2017 fiscal year.

The governor said the 2017 budget would concentrate on completion of projects that will turn the economic fortune of the citizenry, as well as stimulate the economy of the state out of recession.

He added that, the budget would also encourage and support youths in agricultural production as a means of empowering, boosting production, developing value chain and strengthening commercial venture for a stable economy;

“Mr Speaker, Honourable Members, the current economic recession in which we find ourselves has continued to constrain our inflow.  It is for this reason that government decided to strengthen internal control mechanism in public financial management.”

“Accordingly, government intends to continue to strictly monitor activities of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in line with the fiscal expenditure framework of this administration,” the governor stated.

Responding, the Speaker of the House, Ibrahim Balarabe, thanked the governor for his pragmatism in handling the 2016 budget and assured of the house commitment to ensure speedy passage of the budget.
