Akwa Ibom Assembly urges Gov Eno to enforce ban on motorcyclists

Published by

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Gov. Umo Eno to direct the Commissioner for Transport and security agencies to enforce the ban on motorcyclists operating on restricted routes in Uyo Metropolis.

The resolution of the House at plenary on Friday is a sequel to the notice on the motion on the need to re-enforce the ban and prosecution of motorcyclists plying in unauthorised areas within Uyo Metropolis, brought before the house by the member representing Mkpat Enin state constituency, Mr Uwem Imo-Ita.

The motion was seconded by the member representing the Ini state constituency, Mr Lawrence Udoide.

Imo-Ita expressed displeasure at the nonchalant attitude of defaulters, who trade with impunity by deliberately plying the unauthorised routes and using their motorcycles even in broad daylight, not minding the consequences of the law.

The lawmaker said that it was most saddening that personnel of the law enforcement agencies who are supposed to enforce the law are the major defaulters, hence not leading by example.

He pleaded with the leadership and members of the House to support the motion to reactivate the law for the arrest and prosecution of the offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.

He urged that the directive be extended to the Ethical and Attitudinal Re-Orientation Commission (EARCOM) to step up the public enlightenment campaign to sensitise residents to the gravity of the offence.

Members who spoke in support of the motion frowned at the fragrant abuse of the law and urged the governor to direct appropriate authorities to swing into action with a view to enforcing the law.

The Speaker, Mr Udeme Otong, directed the Clerk, Mrs NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the resolution of the House to the Governor and issue directives to appropriate authorities for the enforcement of the ban.
