Akwa Ibom Assembly okays N142.72bn supplementary budget

Towards effective implementation of various projects as the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel inches towards the 2023 terminal point, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has approved another N142.72billion supplementary budget.

It was at Tuesday’s plenary chaired by the Speaker, Mr. Aniekan Bassey (Uruan), who stressed the need for the complete agenda of the administration to supported to ensure all projects enunciated were completed before 2023.

The supplementary appropriation passed into law by the 26-member Assembly, according to the House’s Committee on Budget and Appropriation chaired by Mr. Uduak Odudoh (Ikot Abasi\Eastern Obolo), is made up of N39.30billion for recurrent expenditures and N103.42billion as capital expenses.

The House had on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, received the proposal with a directive by the governor, urging them to augment the initial 2021 budget of N456.3billion for seamless completion of all ongoing projects and other programmes of the government, forcing accelerated hearing of the matter.

However, Odudoh, who presented the Committee report, explained that during deliberations at the Committee level, the Finance Commissioner has underscored the importance of the budget as being necessary to realign priorities in line with the complete agenda of Governor Emmanuel.

“The supplementary budget as explained by the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Linus Nkan, and that of Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr. Akan Okon, were basically meant to cater for the effects of inflation, escalating foreign exchange rates on priority and key programmes and projects of government for effective and scheduled delivery,” he said.

For quick assent to the law, Speaker Bassey directed the document to be delivered to the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Mandu Umoren, for onward transmission to Governor Emmanuel’s signature.
