AKTINA FM, the Internet Radio Station founded by Elena Maroulleti, also its Executive Producer/Host, marked its thirtieth anniversary earlier this month.
Elena, a journalist and a media entrepreneur, founded and established this true bilingual radio in early May 1993 with a mission to promote and enrich the knowledge about Hellenic culture, Greece and Cyprus, to support Greek and Greek Cypriot Americans especially of the new generations preserve their ancestral roots and culture and to provide factual and unbiased vital news and information of interest to Greek and non-Greek speaking listeners in New York City, nationally in the USA and worldwide.
In October of 2018, the Astoria-based AKTINA FM Radio became the first ever Greek American Radio to be honored by the New York City Council and the City of New York with a street co-naming. 27th Street between 23rd and 24th Avenues in Astoria where AKTINA FM was founded, was co-named, “AKTINA FM WAY” in recognition of “the outstanding and important contributions of AKTINA FM to Greek-Americans and Americans alike” for a quarter of a century.
Speaking about this exceptional 30-year old journey, Elena stressed: “We embarked on this journey 30 years ago and since then we have proudly earned much recognition, respect and many honors from the public we serve as well as from elected officials from different branches of the local, state and federal governments in the U.S.A. We have achieved this by keeping good to our founding mission and promise to deliver much desired and unique commercial-free radio programming which always keeps our devoted audience engaged and faithful to AKTINA FM. We are extremely proud and honored for the outstanding support our listeners are providing over the years with their tax-exempt donations, as well as for the partial financial support we receive from the New York City Council and other City and State agencies, including the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. We are also very thankful for having over the years many devoted volunteer staff members who have been donating their time for free in support of AKTINA FM. We are very grateful for this support which has been and still is vital for the survival of AKTINA FM.”
She described this 30th-anniversary celebration for the station, as a milestone for the delivery and dissemination to millions of listeners in the United States and abroad of cultural programs of vital importance which promote Greece and Cyprus, as well as, news and information on a variety of topics of wide public interest and plenty of quality entertainment.
Ms. Maroulleti also stressed that, looking ahead for this year, and for the years to come, “we strive to preserve AKTINA FM as a highly rated Radio which continues to make a difference for our wide and diverse audience here at home (New York City and the U.S.A) and abroad. Thus, we will preserve our initial mission as a Greek American Radio broadcaster.
Our ongoing goal is to always further strengthen the trust and respect AKTINA FM has earned over the years. In this respect, we will continue to deliver unique and desired programming that connects and brings together our ethnically diverse communities in New York City and thus making a difference in American life. We will also continue to deliver our engaging democratic platforms of discussion and expression, news, sports and other informative content and exceptional entertainment with music that covers all representative aspects of the Greek music repertoire, including international classics. Our slogan/motto is AKTINA FM, The Smart Choice! And to sum it up, we strive to preserve AKTINA FM as, “The Alternative Voice and the Smart Choice for Lovers of Greek Music, Culture, and the Home for Independent Reporting and Conversation on Issues that Matter to all of our Listeners!”
