If there is anything for which the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi should be commended, it is this market which is well designed, well-constructed and a beauty to behold along Molete-Challenge axis of the state capital.
The market shows that Governor Ajimobi meant well in his campaign promises of improving the welfare of the masses. Unfortunately, the same masses are not showing corresponding appreciation for the gesture. The danger of markets on highways in Ibadan and other towns is real and the traders know. Unfortunately, they don’t care.
It is high time, therefore, that Oyo State Government took the bull by the horn and ensured the new market is put on optimal use. Evidence abound that our people would not comply with a law unless some element of coercion is infused.
But before then, government information department should embark on sensitization tour of streets markets with a view to educating them on the benefits of relocating to the new market.
Finally, the tenancy rates should be reviewed downward to make it affordable to the traders.
