People dressed in various traditional attires adorned the landscape of Ibadan, Oyo state capital, on Monday, in commemoration of this year’s World Culture day.
The day which featured a carnival cum road show around Ibadan, featured Masquerade dance, displays by different ethnic groups.
In apparent compliance to the state government’s directive, public officials, civil servants, students, celebrated by dressing to work and school in native attires.
In his remarks on the celebration, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state averred that beyond dressing, culture encompassed the spiritual being of the people, their godliness, fearlessness and respect for the rule of law.
He also decried the bastardization of the culture and values of hard work, respectability, decency for the culture of impunity, greed and selfishness.
“Culture is an amalgam of our social, traditional and economic activities.”
“In Yoruba Land, our culture derives itself from the spiritual being of our people, godliness, fairness, fearlessness, and respect for the rule of law.”
“The custom demands that you respect elders, institutions, constituted authorities. The culture also demands that one dresses to promote the environment in a way to show decency, integrity and such that is welcoming to others. The Yoruba culture also demands that you respect someone who is one year older than you.”
“We have culture of hard work, respectability, decency. But, over the years, our culture has been bastardized, adulterated with the influence of foreign culture. Now we have culture of impunity, greed, selfishness, and making it by all means.”
“In those days, it wasn’t about how much money you had, but about your family name and integrity. That culture is eroding. Culture is not only about dressing, it is the totality of the way we live.”
“Culture is the embodiment of our lifestyle, even about having fear of God that is Godliness. We should throw away bad culture. Overtime, culture evolves but we accentuate those good part of our culture,” Ajimobi said.
Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Toye Arulogun explained that the series of events marking this year’s World Culture Day, themed, “Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development”, aimed at celebrating the Yoruba culture and enabling the appreciation of cultural diversity.
