GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has advocated a redesign of the nation’s education curriculum towards creating entrepreneurship driven graduates.
Speaking when the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright paid him a courtesy visit at Governor’s office, on Friday, Ajimobi remarked that imbuing graduates with a mindset to create jobs themselves would help reduce the high rate of unemployed graduates.
Ajimobi premised this call on the current education system which he decried was more civil service orientated.
He noted that while government worked to create the enabling environment for jobs to thrive, Ajimobi also prayed for more of the British government’s involvement in developing middle level manpower and skills.
“Youths constitute about 60 percent of our population and we need to concentrate on developing entrepreneurs.”
“The education we have in Nigeria today appears to be supportive of civil/public service not much of entrepreneurship. I believe Britain can help us develop middle level manpower.”
“Two million people hit the job market every year. Government cannot create all the jobs for this vast population, it can only create the enabling environment for people to create jobs. We must encourage entrepreneurship and skill acquisition for people to be able to work on their own,” Ajimobi said.
Furthermore, he avowed that the state looked forward to more collaboration with Britain in Commerce, Agriculture, Youth Empowerment and Technical education.
In his remarks, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright said the British government was keen on creating business opportunities in Nigeria with a view to promoting trade relations between the two countries.
Noting that 2 million Nigerians hit the labour market yearly, Arkwright said the British government sought opportunity to tap Oyo state’s agricultural potential, and setting up companies across the country.
