Aiyedatiwa flags off disbursement of N1bn gratuity to LG retirees

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State announced on Tuesday that his administration will review the template for the payment of gratuity to retirees to expedite the settlement of backlogs owed by the government.

The governor made this statement during the flag-off ceremony of the second batch of bulk payments of outstanding gratuities to local government retirees in Akure, the state capital.

He emphasized that this initiative is part of ongoing efforts by his administration to enhance the welfare of retirees in the state. Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted previous payments made under his administration, noting the substantial relief provided to many retirees, and assured that regular payments will continue.

Aiyedatiwa stated, “Today marks another milestone in our commitment to the welfare of our people, both during their service and in retirement in the Sunshine State.”

“In November 2023, we successfully executed the first batch of bulk payments of outstanding gratuities for former local government staff and primary school teachers. In January 2024, we flagged off the payment of N1.2 billion for pensioners in the State Civil Service for the year 2014.”

The governor explained that the current batch primarily focuses on local government retirees from 2012 and aims to settle outstanding arrears from previous years. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to the consistent and equitable payment of pensions and gratuities.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also addressed concerns about the fairness of the payment process, assuring that the system prioritizes equity, fairness, and transparency.

He encouraged those not included in the current batch to remain hopeful, as the administration continues efforts to enhance the happiness and welfare of the majority.

During his welcome address, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, praised the governor for his prompt action, acknowledging the longstanding challenges faced by retirees.

Takuro revealed that the governor had instructed him to set aside funds specifically for pension payments, highlighting retirees’ gratitude towards the governor for his compassion and commitment to their welfare.

Head of Service, Mr. Bayo Philips, described the event as a manifestation of divine intervention, commending the governor’s actions. He acknowledged the complexities involved in addressing gratuity issues, noting the difficulties faced by many other state governors in meeting high demands.

State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Mr. Johnson Osunyemi, expressed gratitude to the governor for the significant relief provided to retirees, who have awaited these payments for a long time. He assured the governor of retirees’ support in the upcoming elections.

Joshua Adeoye, a retired teacher and beneficiary, thanked the governor for his compassion and interest in the welfare of pensioners in the state.
