The Old Boys’ Association of Abeokuta Grammar School (AGSOBA), has decried overpopulation of students in public secondary schools in Ogun State.
This development according to the Association was responsible for the low quality of education in the state.
The Association President, Dr Sunday Oduntan, said this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen about the activities marking the 115th Founder’s Day anniversary of the school.
The theme for the anniversary is “Harnessing Renewed Youth Participation in National Discourse for Sustainable Economic Development and Prevention of JAPA Among Youths”.
Oduntan hinted that the school has a population of about 7000 students, and the second-largest student population in the state.
He said, “When you have over 1,000 students per teacher, it is a problem and it will affect the quality of education.
“What the government can do is to either build more schools or build more classrooms in schools, I can tell you the number of classrooms built here (Abeokuta grammar school) by the government, we have been building classrooms with our money so we can let go of our value.
“Abeokuta grammar school has the second largest population school in Ogun state, while the Iganmode high school has the largest.
Imagine a teacher marking over 1, 000 scripts, that is why many teachers give scripts to senior students to help mark. So, overpopulation in schools affects the quality of education.”
The Association equally charged President Bola Tinubu to provide qualitative education for Nigerian students to curb the “Japa” syndrome trend.
Oduntan identified education, infrastructure and stable power supply as basic ingredients for national development.
“When you build a Nation, three things are important, education, electricity and infrastructure. When you have education, you have human capital.
With Electricity, you generate more employment and bring up industries. With infrastructure, there will be easy movement when you have good roads.
“When everything is in order, JAPA will soon be JAPADA which means, those who had travelled out of Nigeria, will soon begin to come back Home”, he noted.
