Barely one week after a peaceful protest carried out by the youths from the oil-rich communities of Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta in Imo State at the headquarters of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Owerri, the entrance into the operational office has remained closed.
Different placards placed at the entrance of the office situated along Owerri/Port Harcourt Road, including a coffin have remained there untouched with the gates locked.
The youths carried out the protest to register their displeasure over an alleged marginalisation of the people of oil-bearing communities as it concerns the recent employment conducted by NDDC without giving a slot to any youth from the area.
Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri on Friday, the President of National Youths of Ohaji/Egbema, Comrade Chinonye Ugorji, insisted that the NDDC gate would remain closed until they rehabilitate the roads in the oil-producing community and give employment to their youths.
Ugorji said that that had become necessary considering the poor state of the roads in the affected communities.
Ugorji described it as unfortunate that NDDC would carry out employment and the oil-producing communities would not be considered.
It would be recalled that the first time the youth carried out the protest, the authorities of NDDC assured the youths that they would look into their demands and do the needful within one week.
The youths having waited for positive responses as promised by the NDDC to no avail for one week carried out another protest and insisted that until their demands were met, the gate would remain closed.Â
