Again, robbers kill policeman in Edo

A policeman was shot dead by suspected armed gang on the Benin/Auchi road on Thursday.

The death of the policeman who was simply identified as Sgt Jubril comes on the heels of the fatal shooting of two policemen at Igarra, headquarters of Akoko Edo local government area, during an armed hold up at two banks.

The deceased who was on his way to Benin acted as an escort to officials of the Edo state chapter of the Practicing Butchers Association who journeyed to Afuze for the inauguration of the Owan East chapter.

The dastardly act was carried out at Okhou-Iguehianmwen near Obadan community in uhunmwode Local government area.

The convoy of the chairman, Comrade Paul Akhere Odijie and his entourage were returning from Afuze when they rain into the armed men, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen who were robbing travellers on the highway.

According to a victim who would not want his name in print, the suspected criminals were over 20 and brandished sophisticated weapons which they fired intermittently to scare people.

Continuing, the source explained that when the ill-fated policeman sighted the robbers, he fired into the air to scare the rampaging criminals’ bur was fell by return fire from the robbers who had more sophisticated arms.

Jubril who is said to be attached to Government House Benin took to his heels with the vice chairman, Mr. Nath Iyamu in tow.

It was further gathered that the assailant who were more in numbers also laid siege in the forest where they reportedly fled.

The criminal operations lasted for over an hour causing heavy gridlock on the road which leads all the way to Okene, Lokoja in Kogi state and Abuja just as passengers were seen scampering for safety.

Some of the passengers were also robbed of valuable items while others were marched to an unknown destination and severely assaulted by the gun-toting hoodlums.

However, with swift response and concerted efforts of the Nigerian Police Division Uhunmwode, some fleeing passengers were rescued by the team.

It became very worrisome when one of the police escort wasn’t answering his calls

The eyewitness said after a long wait and search for the police officer it seems he was no more.

His lifeless body was confirmed after series of call put across no answer by the joint team of vigilantes and the security operatives

When contacted the Police Spokesman, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor confirmed the incident, “saying police are investigating the incident.
