Again, herdsmen killed nine in Benue

AGAIN, nine persons have been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Benue. The attack came barely three days after they launched a severe attack on Kwande local government area of the state where seven people were killed.

The latest attack occurred at the troubled Guma and Logo council areas in the early hours of Wednesday.

The herdsmen militia were said to have left Logo to Guma where they were said to have killed one person on their way to Guma where they later killed eight people.

It will be recalled that both Guma and Logo had since the New Year day faced incessant attacks.

The Tribune online learnt that the attackers while coming from Logo stormed Tse Shan in Saghev Guma council area around 3.am and slaughter the villagers in there sleep.

Two students who were writing the National Examination Council, NECO were among the dead while several persons are said to be missing and many injured.

Confirmed the attack, Chairman of Guma local government, Mr Anthony Shawon said the attackers came around 3 am on Wednesday.

“I received information that the militia herdsmen about 3.am today (Wednesday) invaded The Shan in Sagyev and hacked down the villagers in there sleep.

“Unfortunately, two students who had come to the village to write the ongoing NECO examination were among the dead.’

Shawon said that the dead and the injured have been conveyed to Gbajimba General Hospital.

He said that the information at his disposal revealed that the herdsmen militia were retreating when they attacked several people along their routes with one body discovered along the road in Logo Local Government Area.

The Security Adviser, Colonel Paul Hemba (rtd) who also confirmed the attack said, ‘it is believed that the attack came from a base in Logo Local Government Area.’

Efforts to confirm the attack from the state command failed, as calls made to the spokesman, ASP Moses Yamu did not pick his call.
