Again, four killed as mining site collapses in Bauchi

A mining site in Kogo Kadage village in Yadagungume area of Ningi LGA, Bauchi State on Saturday collapsed killing four miners who were digging for lead in the area.

It was reliably gathered from a Source from the area that the tragic incident occurred on Saturday night when the miners were digging and trying to excavate lead, one of the mineral resources common in the area.

The source disclosed that people have been there for over one-month mining and excavating lead during which the hole dug collapsed on them burying them underneath.

According to the source who did not want his name on print said the four miners died instantly after they were removed from the collapsed site.

While confirming the incident, the Caretaker Chairman of Ningi local government area, Hon Ibrahim Zubairu described it as most unfortunate saying that four people were trapped in the pit and three died instantly.

Ibrahim Zubairu said that the illegal mining site is located at Kogo Kadage forest, seven kilometres away from Yadagungume town.

He narrated, “Yesterday, Saturday, I was informed that four people were trapped in a mining pit, I directed that they should try and do something and later on, they reported back to me that they recovered three bodies.”

The Caretaker Chairman added that, “I don’t know about the illegal activities of the locals because we have banned all sorts of illegal mining in the entire local government area. It came to me as a surprise when I got the report of the incident.”

The Chairman however said that he has constituted a committee tasked with the responsibilities of checkmating the illegal mining activities and land related matters and also directed Burra Divisional Police Officer for supervision of the illegal mining sites.

He then warned people to desist from illegal mining activities as government would not spare anyone caught wanton.

The caretaker Chairman condoled with the families members of the deceased and prayed for eternal rest and asked the families to bear the irreparable lost.
