After complaining of stomach upset, man asks Uber driver to stop, jumps into Lagos lagoon

A 21-year-old man, on Saturday, decided to end it all in Lagos State when he jumped  into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge inward Adeniji Adele.

The victim was later identified as Daibo Toju Davies, a resident of 17, Sosanya Street, Gbagada and he was said to have plunged into the lagoon around 11.00 a.m.

Emergency responders and local divers could not rescue the victim as of 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, prompting fears that he might have died.

The victim was said to have hired a Toyota Corolla Uber marked KSF 426 GB from Mercy Hospital, Gbagada and was heading to a yet-to-be ascertained destination.

It was gathered that the man informed the Uber driver that he had stomach upset, requesting the driver to stop for him to have some relief.

After alighting from the vehicle, he was said to have headed for the railings on the brodge, climbed them and jumped into the lagoon.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident and added that its officials were drafted to the area when it got the report.

The agency’s Director-General, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, while confirming the incident, said LASEMA was collaborating with some other agencies in the rescue operation.

“Situation report regarding the person who jumped into the lagoon on the Third Mainland bridge inward Adeniji Adele Road says a male adult, Daibo Toju Davies residing at 17, Sosanya Street, Gbagada Soluyi, Lagos, hired a Uber from Mercy Hospital, Gbagada and jumped into the lagoon.

“Investigation revealed that the victim informed the Uber driver of stomach upset. The driver stopped at his request and he then jumped off the bridge.”

“The Uber driver said the missing guy was residing at 17, Sosanya St., Gbagada Soluyi, Lagos.

“The agency’s response team, with the Lagos Fire Service, Marine Rescue team, Lagos State Waterways Authority,  Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, Marine Police and local divers are on ground to find him,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

The vehicle was later taken to Adekunle Police Station where the police are expected to commence investigations.
