Afrocritik expands end-of-year lists, announces leadership change

By: Muhammad Ismail

Afrocritik, a leading platform for African entertainment, arts, culture, and lifestyle, is excited to unveil significant updates to its end-of-year coverage.

Alongside expanding our annual music lists, we are proud to introduce the Top 20 African Best Sports Personalities of 2024, a brand-new feature spotlighting the remarkable achievements of African athletes across genders and various sports disciplines during the year under review.

This initiative underscores Afrocritik’s mission to celebrate African excellence across all fields, shining a spotlight on the individuals who have inspired and united the continent through their extraordinary performances and dedication.

As part of our broader expansion, the Top African Albums list will now include 50 entries (up from 25), and the Top African Songs list has been extended to feature 100 entries (up from 50). These changes reflect our commitment to providing a more inclusive platform for African music, ensuring the breadth of the continent’s sonic brilliance is fully recognised.

Our ranking criteria for music list will focus on:
Sonic brilliance
Creativity
Sonic/thematic statement
Production and sound engineering
Cultural relevance
Songwriting

This system ensures that independent artistes, who might lack substantial resources but excel in creativity and innovation, have an equal opportunity to gain recognition alongside more established names. Afrocritik’s dedication to highlighting authentic and impactful artistry remains at the core of this expansion.

In line with these developments, Afrocritik is pleased to announce the elevation of Emmanuel ‘Waziri’ Okoro, an esteemed music and pop-culture journalist and critic, to the role of Managing Editor.

Okoro’s expertise and passion for African creativity will play a pivotal role in advancing Afrocritik’s vision of championing authentic African narratives on the global stage.

As a melting pot for African expression, Afrocritik tells African stories through an authentic African lens, inviting the global audience to experience the richness and luxury of Africa. With African arts, culture, and entertainment gaining unprecedented recognition on the global stage—across music, fashion, literature, and film—Afrocritik continues to serve as a trusted platform that informs, educates, and celebrates the continent’s diverse narratives.
