The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has taken delivery of vandalized electricity cables recovered by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command in collaboration with other security agencies in a significant breakthrough against infrastructure sabotage.
A statement signed by the AEDC’s Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications, Adefisayo Akinsanya, said the formal handover was led by FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, who was represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Operations, Ishaku Sharu, underscores the unwavering commitment of security agencies to protecting critical power assets and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.
The statement added that the recovery follows coordinated security operations aimed at cracking down on vandalism and illegal activities that threaten electricity distribution across the FCT and its environs.
AEDC, while commending the swift action of the police, emphasised that such collaborative efforts are crucial in safeguarding national infrastructure and enhancing power reliability.
The statement quoted AEDC’s Managing Director/CEO, Engineer Chijioke Okwuokenye, at the event to express deep appreciation to the security agencies for their relentless efforts while reaffirming the company’s zero-tolerance stance on vandalism.
“We commend the FCT Police Command and other security operatives for their unwavering dedication in recovering these vandalized cables. This successful operation serves as a powerful message that acts of sabotage will not go unpunished. Vandalism is not just a crime against AEDC, it is an attack on our communities, depriving homes, businesses, and critical services of power. AEDC will not relent in its fight against such criminal acts.”
Okwuokenye, while further highlighting the far-reaching consequences of infrastructure vandalism, called for collective action from every stakeholder.
“Vandalism and power theft are not just crimes against AEDC; they are crimes against the progress of our nation. These acts plunge communities into darkness, disrupt livelihoods, and impose heavy financial burdens on all.
“We will pursue every legal measure to bring perpetrators to justice and call on community leaders, residents, and all stakeholders to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities,” the AEDC boss said.
However, to encourage public participation in combating vandalism, AEDC has established multiple whistleblowing channels to facilitate anonymous and secure reporting of suspicious activities.
“AEDC remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting and improving power supply across its network. We will continue to invest in infrastructure, strengthen security measures, and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted electricity for our customers. By working together, we can create a more resilient and sustainable power system that drives economic growth and national development,” the statement concluded.
