The Action Democratic Party has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to experiment with electronic transmission of results in next month governorship election in Anambra State.
National Chairman of the party, Engineer Yabagi Yusuf Sani said this on Thursday while inaugurating the party campaign council ahead of the election in the South-East state.
The Senate on Tuesday had reversed itself on Tuesday at plenary when it amended its resolution on the Electoral Act 2010 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2021 to give the INEC the discretion to decide on electronic voting.
Further investigation by Nigerian Tribune revealed that the House of Representatives in its own resolution had earlier approved electronic transmission of results.
Checks revealed that INEC National Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu at an interactive session equally dropped the hint that the results of the election slated for November 6 would be offloaded from the 5,720 Polling Units in the 21 Local Government Areas in the South-east state.
While commending the federal lawmakers for submitting to the wishes of Nigerians for the electronic transmission, the ADP chairman advised security agencies to be vigilant and ensure that the election in Anambra state was not undermined by those bent on aborting the process.
He said: “Very pertinently, the ADP wishes to call on the Federal Government, all other stakeholders particularly, the security agencies not only to ensure that the governorship election in Anambra State is conducted as scheduled on the 6th of November, 2021. There must not be any compromise, all impediments in the way of a hitch-free exercise, must be cleared so that the wishes of the people prevail at the end of the day. The waves of honest and positive change blowing across the entire country have engulfed the shores of Anambra State and, shall we warn that the consequences of trying to stop the tide, will be fruitless and counterproductive.
“On a final note, I wish to seize this opportunity to congratulate the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, on its historic victory over the debacle with the National Assembly on the issue of electronic transmission of election results. Most certainly, the courage demonstrated by the leadership of INEC under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has in no small measure, reinforced the confidence of Nigerians in the possibilities for the conduct of credible elections in the country in times ahead.
“This is particularly so when cognisance is given to the immense intimidation, arm-twisting and threats from retrogressive agents of anachronism, enemies of democracy, free and fair elections who will want the nation to continue in the old ways that provide them with the rooms to manipulate and rape the people of their inalienable and fundamental rights of electing their political leaders in a democracy. In this regard, the ADP emphatically demanding that the electoral body test-run the electronic transfer of votes in the forthcoming Anambra gubernatorial election.
“For its courage of biting the humble pie by retracting its initial unpopular and reactionary stance on the e-transfer of votes from polling units, the ADP wishes to commend the Senate for listening, for once, to the voice of reason.
“Our party is calling on members of the House of Representatives to emulate the latest decision of our Senators in the process of amending the Electoral Act. In the same vein, the ADP is expressing the hope that the Bill will receive the assent of the President without much delay.”
Engineer Sani expressed confidence that the ADP candidate, Prince Afam Douglas Luke Umezoeke, has what it takes to win the election.
“ADP is riding the waves because our candidate, Prince Afam Douglas Luke Umezoeke is a dashing young man who has carved a niche for himself as a progressive and forward-looking gentleman imbued with outstanding leadership qualities. As a result, he has been making in-roads into the hearts of Ndi-Anambra especially, women, youths and a flurry of eminent political figures basically, for his organizational skills, manifest intelligence and appealing programmes of action when voted into office.
“To give a little window into his message of reinventing leadership in the state, he has promised, among other revolutionary programmes, free education, a radical approach to infrastructural development and a pledge to put in place an economic blueprint that will stimulate Small and Medium Scale Entrepreneurship and commerce to take the enterprising and hardworking people of Anambra State, to greater heights. Nothing can be more endearing and appropriate for a people that renowned for their industry and entrepreneurship.”
