The Adamawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday condemned the brutality and killing of two young men by security personnel operating in Mubi South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The security personnel, who are members of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Customs Service operating in Mubi South LGA, were said to have shot and killed the two young men, who were on separate motorcycles, in the Nasarawo ward about two days ago.
During a resumed sitting on Tuesday, the Assembly strongly condemned the gruesome murder of the young men by security personnel who were supposed to protect them.
This condemnation followed a motion moved by Hon. Yohanna Sahabo Jauro, the member representing Mubi South constituency at the State House of Assembly.
In its four-point resolutions adopted during the sitting, the Assembly advised the affected security agencies to carry out their activities with professionalism and focus on border areas rather than operating within the metropolis.
The Assembly also urged the security agencies to address the issue of multiple checkpoints within Mubi and directed its Committee on Security to liaise with federal lawmakers to propose a lasting solution to the problem.
Earlier, while moving the motion, Mr. Yohanna informed his colleagues that some military and customs officers had shot and killed two of his constituents two days ago without any justification.
He explained, “Mubi South LGA has 10 political wards, out of which 2 are at the LGA headquarters while 8 are in rural areas. These 8 wards are without filling stations for people to buy fuel for their cars, motorcycles, and other day-to-day activities.”
According to him, “My constituents in the affected wards buy fuel from the metropolis and take it to the rural areas. Unfortunately, they face numerous challenges from the military and customs officers while transporting the product to their communities.”
“Security agencies have been harassing, intimidating, and sometimes even killing my peace-loving people,” he lamented.
“In the case of the two boys, the security agencies opened fire on them after sighting them separately transporting fuel to their communities on motorcycles,” he added.

Mr. Yohanna pointed out that the victims were transporting fuel for use in their villages and not for smuggling outside the LGA or the country. He warned that the actions of the security agencies are getting out of hand and cannot continue to be condoned.
He stressed that the security agencies cannot simply go around shooting and killing innocent people they are supposed to protect, and he urged the Assembly to take a stand against such actions.
All members present at Tuesday’s sitting condemned the incident and called for urgent steps to address the situation.
After the unanimous adoption of the resolutions, Speaker Hon. Bathiya Wesley, who presided over the sitting, directed the Clerk of the Assembly to communicate the resolutions to the relevant authorities.
