Adebamowo named fellow of American Society of Clinical Oncology

A Nigerian cancer expert, Professor Clement Adebamowo has been named a fellow of American Society of Clinical Oncology, in recognition of his contribution to clinical oncology in the world.

Adebamowo, a former Professor of Surgery at the University College Hospital is an Associate Director of Population Science and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Centre and Institute of Human Virology.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is the world’s leading professional organisation for physicians and oncology professionals caring for people with cancer.

Dr Kevin Cullen, MD, Director, Marlene and Stewart Geenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Centre, declared: “Dr. Adebamowo is a dedicated international researcher with a stubbornness to develop quality, international clinical research studies and training opportunities.”

Dr Jay Magaziner, Department Chair of Epidemiology and Public Health also said: “His impressive track record in cancer research in complex and challenging populations and settings truly makes him a leader in the oncology field and worthy of this special award.”

Dr Adebamowo received his Bachelor’s degree in Surgery and Medicine with honours from the University of Jos, Nigeria and his postgraduate surgical training at the University College Hospital, lbadan. In 2013, he was elevated to a Professor and in 2015 he became the Associate Director of Population Science, Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

Adebamowo, the President of the Society of Oncology and Cancer Research of Nigeria (SOCRON) has over 200 peer-reviewed publications to his credit and with scientific contributions in the area of the breast and cervical cancers, research ethics, HPV infection epidemiology, and viral genomics.

Adebamowo is identifying barriers to cervical cancer screening and conducting research into different models of delivering HPV DNA based vaccines in low resource and under-served communities internationally.
