Adamawa lawmakers, have agreed to donate N1. 25 million to Isa Hamma, a patient, who lost his kidney to an operation that went wrong in a private clinic in Yola.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that in June 2016, a doctor of a private clinic in Jimeta (name withheld), allegedly conducted a surgery on the victim, a herdsman, removing his kidney in the process.
A member representing Hong Constituency in Adamawa Assembly, Hassan Barguma (Hong-APC), had moved a motion under a “Matter of Urgent Public Importance” in February to seek assistance for the patient.
Barguma disclosed to NAN on Friday that the 25 lawmakers in the Assembly had agreed to contribute N1. 25 million for the patient.
“We are going to give him N1. 25 million from our salaries this March.
“We have informed his relations to come for the donation immediately salary is paid,” Barguma said.
Barguma told NAN that the House also mandated its Committee on Health to liaise with the State Government on how to further assist the patient, who now survived on life support machine to go for transplant in India.
Speaking on development, Mustafa Ribadu, a youth activist, who is mobilising assistance for the patient, lauded the contribution of the Assembly and urged the public, particularly the rich to emulate the lawmaker.
He said that N7. 4 million was needed for the kidney transplant in India and already, more than two million naira had been realised while awaiting the N1. 25 million donation from the House of Assembly.
“Everything being equal, we hope to go for the transplant in April, as a relation of the victim, has volunteered to donate his kidney,” Ribadu said.
Also speaking to NAN, an uncle of the patient, Umar Yahaya, lauded the public for the support shown to the victim and his family.
“We are grateful to all, particularly the governor, members of the Adamawa Assembly and the media,” Yahaya said.
