ACF calls for urgent action to prevent flooding in Maiduguri, Jere

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has tasked federal and state governments to develop and enforce a comprehensive settlement plan, prohibiting construction on waterways to mitigate the recurrence of devastating floods in Maiduguri and Jere.

Bashir Dalhatu, Chairman, ACF Board of Trustees, made the call in Maiduguri on Friday, stressing the urgent need for increased support to alleviate the catastrophic impact of the floods.

The recent disaster resulted in significant loss of life, destruction of property worth billions of naira and displacement of thousands. Dalhatu noted that the magnitude of the devastation demands collective action.

“We appreciate the generous contributions from individuals and organisations, but the scale of devastation demands more urgent support,” he said.

During his visit to Borno State, Dalhatu condoled with the Governor and the Shehu of Borno, underscoring the ACF’s commitment to supporting affected communities.

The ACF also called on well-meaning individuals, organisations and government bodies to intensify support for communities devastated by the flooding.

Dalhatu emphasized that the ACF’s visit to Borno State was to condole with the people over the flooding, which has displaced thousands and caused significant damage to homes, farmlands and infrastructure.

“We have visited the Governor, where we expressed same sentiment. We also visited the Shehu of Borno State to express our condolences. We shall also embark on visits to areas still submerged by floodwaters to assess the needs firsthand and ensure that assistance is directed to the right places,” he said.

To address the crisis, Dalhatu advocated for a settlement plan specifying building and waterway locations, enhanced disaster management, and increased federal intervention.

“Implementing a well-structured settlement plan will prevent future floods and safeguard lives,” Dalhatu emphasised.
