Accord traditional rulers with constitutional powers, Kwara monarch urges govt

Published by

In a recent interview, Oba Dr Solomon Olugbenga Oloyede, the Olusin of Isanlu Isin in the Isin local government area of Kwara state, called on the Nigerian government to empower traditional rulers to perform specific roles towards the development of Nigerian society.

According to the traditional ruler, allowing traditional rulers to handle family matters, marriage, divorce, and land disputes would ease the burden on the country’s courts.

He noted that traditional rulers have always been consulted on religious issues, even during the colonial era, before policies were formulated.

The monarch, who is also the chairman of the Isin local government traditional rulers’ Council and a member of the Kwara state traditional rulers’ Council, emphasized the importance of peace in grassroots areas. “As long as there’s peace in grassroots areas, there will be peace in the state capitals and other Nigerian cities,” he said.

Oba Oloyede commended the present administration of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for its efforts to equip health facilities, construct and renovate schools, pay workers’ salaries, and promote the welfare of traditional rulers in the Isanlu Isin community.

However, he appealed to the government to tar some of the roads in the area to encourage agricultural practices and tourism and improve the socioeconomic status of the area and the state in particular.

The traditional ruler, who has been on the throne since 2009, said that his reign had brought about infrastructural development and growth to the community.

He also appealed to the political class in the country, especially in the Yoruba-speaking communities, to allow peace to reign after the 2023 general elections. “Not every contestant must win in any election, even with the most credible umpire,” he advised, urging any aggrieved candidate to seek justice through the court of competent jurisdiction.

One of the high chiefs in the community, Esinkin Isolo of Isanlu Isin, High Chief Samuel Sunday Bolarin, also appealed to members of the Isanlu Isin community to promote unity and allow for peace in the community as Nigeria transits from one administration to another.

“We have told them not to follow or take too seriously what they read or hear on social media. Because if they follow suit, there will be problems in many communities in Nigeria,” he said.
