Accident claims 11 lives, injures 16 in Kano — FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) RS1.2 Kano Sector Command has reported a tragic accident that claimed 11 lives and left 16 injured at Gaya Junction along the Kano – Maiduguri road.

This information was conveyed in a statement signed by CRC AA Labaran, the Sector Public Education Officer of FRSC RS1.2 Kano Sector Command, which was released to the press in Kano on Saturday.

The statement reads: The command expresses deep sadness in reporting a tragic road traffic crash that occurred on 19th April 2024, at approximately 15:45hrs local time.

According to Labaran, a total of twenty-eight individuals were involved in the crash, resulting in eleven fatalities and sixteen injuries.

He disclosed that the incident took place at the Gaya Junction along the Kano – Maiduguri road and involved two vehicles: a Toyota Hummer bus with registration number KTG 190 XB and a Hijet mini pick-up with registration number KTG 501 YG.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the probable cause of the crash was overspeeding, leading to loss of control and subsequent fire outbreak.

He further explained, “A total of twenty-eight individuals were involved in the crash, resulting in eleven fatalities and sixteen injuries reported. One person was rescued unhurt from the wreckage.”

In response to the tragic event, the injured victims were swiftly transported to Gaya General Hospital for urgent medical attention, while the deceased were respectfully laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony.

Labaran also mentioned that Kano Sector Commander, CC IS Abdullahi, expressed profound sorrow over the incident and emphasized the importance of compliance with road safety rules and regulations.

He advised commercial drivers to ensure the installation of Speed Limit devices on their vehicles to avoid crashes resulting from speed limit violations. He also warned drivers to refrain from committing traffic offences such as speed violations and overloading of vehicles with passengers, animals, or goods.
