Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are currently lamenting the high price of sugar.
Sugar is an important household commodity used as a sweet-favorite ingredient for different foods. It is important in every household, just like salt.
Every household in Nigeria needs sugar for one purpose or another. It makes cakes, cookies, pastries, doughnuts, and desserts such as ice cream and yoghurt.
Sugar is also used for beverages such as tea, milk, smoothies, and coffee, among other foods.
With the high demand and usage of sugar, it has become a very important commodity in every home.
Speaking to a resident of Lokogoma, Apo district, of the capital city, Mrs Vera Nor said families in Abuja may have to look for substitutes for sweetening favours due to the way the price of sugar is rising.
“You can no longer get sugar for N50 anymore in this town; they will tell you the price has gone up; sugar is now sold for N100; that is the minimum,” she stated.
When the Nigerian Tribune visited Nyanya Market, Mansur Musa told our reporter that the bag of 50kg was going for N67,000.
“For the past few years, the price of sugar has been going up. This same 50kg was sold for N25,000 three years ago, but today, the price has doubled.
“A mudu of sugar is sold for N2200, so if you sell the commodity for N50.00, there is no gain for you at all. For us to see profit, we have to also increase the price.
“So, a measurement of peak milk tin cup of sugar is now N250; people are complaining, but there is nothing we can do; it is the market price,” he said.
Mrs Kenneth Abua of Gbagbalape lamented that “even sugar is becoming unaffordable to the ordinary man in Nigeria.
“The way things are going in this country, a poor man may not be able to buy sugar for his family in the near future”.
In view of the above, the federal government unveiled the National Sugar Masterplan in 2012 in a bid to ensure the sufficiency of the commodity in Nigeria.
Many years later, the policy has been unable to produce enough raw sugar and end importation, still living under the influence of foreign exchange determinants.
As the prices of sugar continue to rise, very soon there may be an increase in the prices of beverages and drinks.
