IT was a day of national mourning after a Monday attack on Kaduna-bound train by terrorists. The terrorists on Monday night bombed and successfully immobilised the 970 passenger-filled Abuja-Kaduna train.

It was gathered that the terrorists planted explosives on the rail tracks and bombed the train just before Rijana, a community along the rail line in Kaduna notorious for kidnapping and other security breaches.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that as of Tuesday, eight bodies were recovered, 26 passengers were injured, while others were still unaccounted for.

However, the evacuation of the survivors of the attack was concluded by the Kaduna State government in collaboration with the security agencies, and state emergency officials.

The Kaduna State Government says it has received from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) the detailed passenger manifest for the Abuja-Kaduna train service AK9 which was attacked.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan on Tuesday.

According to the documents received, 398 passengers bought tickets for the trip, but 362 were validated as having boarded the train through the recognised turn-stile.

It also said the passenger manifest did not include NRC staff and security officials who were on board.

The statement said that “security agencies have reported that eight bodies were recovered and 26 persons were injured during the attack. Investigations are still ongoing to ascertain the status of the passengers who were on board the train and remain unaccounted for at the time of this update.

Search operations are also being sustained.

Citizens are requested to contact the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency on the phone line 09088923398, to make enquiries or provide information regarding passengers who were on board the Abuja-Kaduna train AK9.”

The statement equally added that many of those who were wounded or sustained serious injuries were taken to hospitals.

Survivors recount ordeals

A former Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Ibrahim Wakkala recounted his ordeal by ascribing his survival to God. He said when they started hearing gunshots close to their coach, he knew something was amiss. Ac- cording to him, the military presence really helped, say- ing the casualties or fatalities could have been more.

Fatima Shuaibu, a student and one of the survivors, gave a detailed account of the attack.

“I was sitting close to the window when I saw the bandits or terrorists throw something like a bomb and the train started shaking. When the train finally stopped, the bandits started shooting; they broke the door of the train beside the VIP side,” she said.

Continuing further, she said: “the bandits came inside, shot at some of the passengers while they took some passengers inside a bush path before the security operatives came about one hour thirty minutes after the attack. I saw about 500 security personnel who came to rescue us.”

She also recalled, that the bandits targeted the VIP coach, after which they went to the economy side, SP 17, where they shot many people.

“They told us they came with five cars and motorcycles that they would take some of the people away in. When the soldiers came, they started exchanging gunfire. As they were shooting, the terrorists started shouting ‘Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!! The security operatives came inside the train and drove us to safety. Those injured were taken to 44 military hospital and St. Gerald hospital.”

She recalled that some of the terrorists were teenagers, just as they looked Chadian and Nigerien.

Another survivor, Muhammadu Ishaq, told Nigerian Tribune that “I did not see when they boarded the train. I just turned and I heard them saying that everybody should come out, and I left the coach. I don’t know how many people were taken away. l met two people on the floor laying helplessly as though they were dead already. They were speaking in Hausa, but they were Fulani; one was telling the other to use the gun to break the door, then they started shooting. I saw two people dead. The security personnel came after one and half hours.”

Maimuna Ibrahim, another survivor who had a bullet in her leg, however, said she was lucky as it did not touch her bone.

She thanked the Nigerian Army and the police for rescuing them. Relatives lament missing loved ones

Relatives of the victims have started expressing grief over the whereabouts of their loved ones, while praying for their safe return from wherever they may be.

The relatives were observed to have become traumatised because they did not know the fate and the whereabouts of their loved ones.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews at the train station on Tuesday in Kaduna that the train officials were yet to give them satisfactory answers regarding the fate of their loved ones.

Mr Abdulaziz Kassim, a brother to one of the victims, seen consoling their distraught mother at the train station, said he spoke with his brother few hours before news broke out about the sad incident.

“He has been missing since yesterday’s tragic incident occurred; we had of it in the night and that is why we came here this morning, his number is going through but there has been no response. The train officials are yet to tell us anything about the missing persons. They, however, said some were at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, we went there but we couldn’t find him, we pray that God should keep them and return them back to us safely,” he prayed.

Also, Gideon Gambo, an elder brother to two of the victims of the train attack, said he boarded the train from Kaduna to Abuja on the fateful day.

“When we reached Abuja, I called my two brothers, Jessy Gambo and Gayus Gambo individually, to inform them that I had arrived and that I would see them the following day so that we can return to Kaduna together.

“They said they were in a hurry to meet up an appointment, and they will take the next trip to Kaduna. Later at about 10.55 p.m., the Chief Security Officer of the train who is my friend called to inform me of the sad event.

“Then, I immediately called my brothers but their numbers were not going through. I had to drive down to Kaduna this early morning to get information on what is happen- ing and the state of my brothers whose whereabouts are unknown and that of others.

“I called one of the cleaners who I know is working with the train station, he said they are also yet to see or hear from their colleagues who were on duty when the tragic incident happened.

“Officials of the train station are yet to give us any detailed information, our prayer is that God should keep them safe wherever they are,” Gambo prayed.
